8 Simple Techniques to Effectively Promote and Distribute Your Content

You put all of your time, resources, and creative energy into creating an amazing piece of content, hit “publish,” and then...*crickets.* If you struggle to gain traction on your content, you may need to reevaluate your content distribution and marketing strategy. Here are eight ways you can distribute your content for maximum reach:

1. First things first: create valuable content.

Your content distribution and marketing efforts will be in vain if the content is of low quality and is not engaging. Provide your target audience with content that is interesting and of value to them, and you will see a high return on investment (ROI) for your content marketing.

2. Use email marketing campaigns.

It is not enough to share your content on social media channels. Strong email marketing  campaigns can be instrumental in expanding your content’s reach. In the email, you can include a portion of the content and then link  to the full content. You could also post the full piece of content in the email, but you should be sure to include a “call to action” that lets readers know where they can go to learn more or how they can contact you.

3. Send out newsletters.

You can promote several pieces of your content by sending out a well-packaged weekly or biweekly email newsletter to all your subscribers. For example, The Muse, a job listing and career advice website, collects both original and curated content into an email like this:

4. Use paid distribution channels.

Do not be afraid to put some money behind good content. You can use paid search or paid media in addition to social media ads. You do not need to put money behind every piece of content—promoting the content that is performing best organically can help you expand your reach to new audiences.

5. Guest post.

Guest posting not only allows you to have a voice on other platforms, it also provides you with an opportunity for promoting your website. You can link to your content in your author bio or within the guest post.

6. Leverage social media.

You can establish a viable connection between your social media channels and your content platform (whether it be a website, blog, or YouTube channel). For example, if you would like to promote a blog, you can post the first half of the blog as a LinkedIn article and then link to the full blog at the end of the article. Here is an example taken from a LinkedIn article:

“This story is a hard, breaking news story and the narrative style in the beginning of the story works well. You can apply this to your own hard news stories. And although you can add color to the leads of both hard and soft news stories, soft news can begin with more embellishment than the leads in hard news.

I will write a blog post about the difference between soft and hard news in the near future, because I saw writers at my own student newspaper fail to understand the difference of how both should be written and how their respective leads should look like.

This article was republished from my blog, The Student Writer. You can find more articles like this one here: https://thestudentofwriting.wordpress.com/”

The writer repurposed a blog post as a LinkedIn article in order to expand the reach of her content and garner more traffic to her blog.

7. Take advantage of influencers.

Influencers have a wide, engaged audience. Ask industry influencers for quotes to include in your content, and send them the published piece once it’s complete so they can share the content on their own platforms. In addition, you can collaborate with others in your industry (influencers or otherwise) by co-writing articles and blog posts, co-sponsoring content on other sites, or doing a podcast together. These types of content can be based on the original piece of content you are trying to promote (e.g. a longer podcast based on your blog).

8. Distribute content on external channels.

Content distribution channels like reddit and Pocket are valuable because their users are specifically looking for content. Content creators receive significant amounts of traffic from these channels.
